Australia’s latest economic stimulus: Easing bank lending rules

Image
Australia on Friday said it would simplify bank lending rules to free up credit in a bid to stimulate the economy, which slid into its first recession in nearly 30 years due to the coronavirus pandemic. The changes will ease the regulatory burden and reduce the cost and time faced by consumers and small businesses seeking to access credit, Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said. “The flow of credit will be absolutely critical to our economic recovery,” Frydenberg told reporters in Canberra. Australia asks Google to remove images from top of sacred site Uluru

Australia has asked Google to remove pictures on its Maps service taken from the top of Uluru, the sacred Aboriginal monolith that visitors were banned from climbing last year. Google Maps currently hosts several user-uploaded images from the top of the site, taken before the ban came into place, as well as a Street View path recorded by a climber in 2018. But Parks Australia, which looks after the country's natural treasures, has asked the tech giant to take down pictures uploaded by users after complaints from the Anangu Aboriginal people, Uluru's traditional owners. Australia's August unemployment rate didn't seem to make sense. Here's what's going on

Image
The August labour force figures surprised everyone – unemployment was expected to rise, given the Melbourne lockdown, and yet it fell. And while this is good news, a dig into the figures reveals that it needs to be tempered with the realisation that we remain deeply within a recession. The unemployment rate falling in August from 7.5% to 6.8% (the second biggest monthly fall on record) brought to mind the old line that if you understand what is going on, you clearly have not been paying attention. Humpback whale finds escape from Australian crocodile river

Image
A humpback whale that took a wrong turn into a crocodile-infested river in Australia has safely returned to sea. The whale was first seen in the Northern Territory (NT) river over a week ago, prompting fears it may get stuck in shallow waters or hit a boat. Two others also swam into the East Alligator River for a short time before returning to their sea migration. The remaining whale managed to find its way out over the weekend during high tides, Parks Australia said on Monday. It is the first known instance of humpback whales in the river in the Kakadu National Park, on the country's northern coast. Read more: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-54230578

Australian woman's search for answers in a forest on the other side of the world

Australia has sleepwalked into a society where profit trumps quality care

Image
The outbreak of Covid-19 in Victorian aged care homes has shone a harsh light on the conditions in which low-paid workers struggle to provide care to some of the most vulnerable people in society. Most of these workers are women – as are those in disability care and childcare. The work they are engaged in has its roots in the domestic economy. Care work was once the domain of the home. It was, essentially, women’s work. Read more: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/sep/21/australia-has-sleepwalked-into-a-society-where-profit-trumps-quality-care

Chinese Australians scared to speak out for fear family members in China will be targeted, paper says

Dozens of people including Chinese Australians have been victims of Chinese Communist party intimidation in Australia, according to a policy paper published by the China Matters thinktank. The cases include a dissident who said he received a message from a Chinese Ministry of Public Security official the day after he attended a Tiananmen memorial in Australia in 2019, warning that his actions would have an impact on his family. The bank account of the dissident’s parents, who were still based in China, was subsequently frozen, according to the paper by Dr Dirk van der Kley, a policy research program director at China Matters, who said he had personally seen the message and a screenshot of the account. Australian cricket’s great enigma finally delivered on an eight-year promise

Image
For all of Glenn Maxwell’s mercurial abilities, it is still surprising he only has two one-day international centuries to his name even considering how often he bats in the lower middle order. It is a tally no one could have predicted when he was so consistently frightening at the 2015 World Cup — the tournament where he notched his maiden ODI ton, an event at which he averaged 64.8 with a strike rate of 182.02. The following January he would be crowned Australia’s ODI player of the year. The world was his oyster and as long as he maintained the rage no total would be out of Australia’s reach. There were signs Australia had unearthed something special in 2012 when he was first called up and the past year had confirmed just that. National Museum of Australia drops $8m on largest private collection of Australiana

Image
The first thing Sir Charles Kingsford Smith did after touching down in Melbourne in January 1932 in his Southern Star plane was light up a cigarette. The second — once police and government authorities had turned their backs — was to stealthily cut a foot-long gash into the side of his trusty aircraft, and retrieve a parcel hidden deep inside the fuselage. Key points: The National Museum of Australia has acquired Trevor Kennedy's famous collection of Australiana for $8 million Mr Kennedy spent decades collecting the pieces The acquisition marks a proud moment for the museum The pioneering aviator had just landed with Australia's first commercial shipment of airmail from England. But he had also smuggled home a diamond and sapphire brooch that he had made in Amsterdam for his wife, Mary. The bespoke brooch was highly sentimental — it had been fashioned in the shape of the famous Southern Cross aircraft in which the aviator completed the first trans-Pacific flight in 1928. Read ...

Where's my Waitrose? Why swanky supermarkets are rare in Australia

As soon as you enter the Whole Foods Market flagship store in Austin, Texas, staff smile from behind a concierge desk. That’s before you refill your growler with local craft beer from the bar, your bottle with kombucha on tap or visit the on-site taqueria (one of seven food and drink experiences in the store). As for the aisles, they’re stocked with more canned cold brew nitro coffee, seasonal produce and organic vegan white cheddar chickpea puffs than you can poke an artisan bread stick at. Voice of Real Australia: Running out of clothes on the road

They say clothes maketh the man (or woman) and I'm here to say how much I now appreciate active wear. I'm between homes at the moment and living largely out of a suitcase anyway as I travel throughout western Queensland to report on the spring bull sales, so I ended up with no leggings or sweatshirt packed for an early morning run last week. No matter, I thought, I'll just run in yesterday's jeans and T-shirt. Read more: https://www.standard.net.au/story/6922520/running-out-of-clothes/
