Coronavirus Australia latest: the week at a glance

 Good evening, here are the latest developments on the coronavirus pandemic in Australia. This is Naaman Zhou and it’s Friday 7 August.

On Wednesday, a man in his 30s became the youngest Australian to die of Covid-19. Victorian premier Daniel Andrews also announced 725 new cases and 15 new deaths in the 24 hours to Wednesday, making it the worst day ever for Covid-19 deaths nationally, and the second-worst for new cases. On Friday, prime minister Scott Morrison announced that Australia had passed the milestone of 20,000 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Buranda traffic backup frustrates commuters, cyclists as Brisbane Metro work starts

 Commuters, cyclists and pedestrians have found rare common ground as they battle delays and difficult transport routes caused by the temporary closure of a key southside thoroughfare in Brisbane. Work on upgrading and extending the Buranda busway station to allow for the new Brisbane Metro has begun but meant Brisbane City Council has closed the eastbound lanes on busy O'Keefe Street between Carl Street and Gillingham Street. A detour is in place via Carl Street, Cornwall Street, Logan Road and Montague Street and the westbound lanes on O'Keefe Street between Gillingham Street and Carl Street were also reduced to a single lane.
