Australia restricts number of citizens returning as virus surges

Australia will halve the number of citizens allowed to return home from overseas each week, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Friday, as authorities struggle to contain a COVID-19 outbreak in the country’s second most populous city.

The state of Victoria reported 288 new cases on Friday, a record daily increase for any part of the country and sparking fears of a wave of community transmission in a country where most cases have involved returned travellers.

 Commuters, cyclists and pedestrians have found rare common ground as they battle delays and difficult transport routes caused by the temporary closure of a key southside thoroughfare in Brisbane. Work on upgrading and extending the Buranda busway station to allow for the new Brisbane Metro has begun but meant Brisbane City Council has closed the eastbound lanes on busy O'Keefe Street between Carl Street and Gillingham Street. A detour is in place via Carl Street, Cornwall Street, Logan Road and Montague Street and the westbound lanes on O'Keefe Street between Gillingham Street and Carl Street were also reduced to a single lane.
