Image
Australia’s consumer watchdog has warned the travel sector it must honour the refund policies that existed at the time of bookings, after widespread complaints that operators were creating new conditions and applying them retrospectively during the Covid-19 crisis. Australia's coronavirus mortality rate 100 times lower than France, the UK, Prime Minister says

Image
Australia's coronavirus mortality is lower than some countries with half our population, the Prime Minister has said. As of Thursday morning, Scott Morrison said Australia had recorded 75 deaths from COVID-19. He said while the number of deaths locally was "never good", compared to other countries it fared well. "As sad as that is for those families, let's not forget that in countries that are smaller than Australia, like Belgium, 6,262 people have died," Mr Morrison said. "In The Netherlands, 4,678 have died, in Sweden, 8,137 people have died." Read more:  https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-23/how-australia-is-tracking-coronavirus-deaths-other-countries/12177430

Australia to Keep Borders Shut For At Least Three Months

Image
Australia will keep its international borders closed for at least three to four months to protect itself from the coronavirus pandemic that continues to deepen in other parts of the world. Border restrictions would likely be the final measure lifted and would stay in place even if other rules were eased according to Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Thursday. Murphy told a government inquiry focusing on the Australian virus response the measures still had scope for exceptional circumstances. Australia's coronavirus lockdown rules and restrictions explained: can I visit my parents and other questions

Image
Many states have brought in sweeping new laws restricting social gatherings and under what circumstances someone is permitted to leave their home. While politicians have said these rules are simple, it is clear the public still has a lot of questions about coronavirus lockdown rules and restrictions. In most states enforcement is left up to police officers’ discretion, therefore it is difficult to provide exact information on what is or isn’t allowed. Modelling shows the strain coronavirus could put on Australia's health system

Image
Australia’s gains in slowing the spread of coronavirus could be undermined if people start to ignore physical distancing rules, the Morrison government warned, as it released modelling of the potential strain on the health system. After facing weeks of calls to release the evidence it is using to justify sweeping restrictions on social and economic life, the government published material on Tuesday that is based on the impact of strategies that have been rolled out around the world – but not Australian case numbers. If there were an unchecked outbreak in Australia, the modelling suggests, some 35,000 intensive care beds could be required at its peak – something that would be well beyond the country’s capacity to provide. What does coronavirus mean for upcoming international sports events in Australia?

Image
In late March, Basketball Australia chief executive Jerril Rechter was preparing to fly to Geneva to meet with the board of Fiba, the game’s governing body. Rechter and three colleagues had tickets booked, bags packed and a pitch ready to sell Australia as the best possible host of the 2022 Women’s World Cup. Just days before their flight, coronavirus-related travel restrictions rendered the trip impossible. Rechter and her team pivoted to video-conferencing, presenting late into the evening during Fiba’s first-ever virtual board meeting. They waited patiently as another nation outlined a competing bid, before re-joining the call to witness Fiba president Hamane Niang open an envelope that revealed Australia as the winner.
