Australia's bushfire royal commission to focus on preparing for future emergencies, but not climate change policy

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a royal commission into the deadly bushfires that have devastated large parts of the country this summer.

The inquiry does not appear to focus specifically on the government's climate policy, concentrating instead on "practical action" to improve Australia's preparedness for natural disasters and future bushfire seasons as the climate becomes more extreme, according to the terms of reference released on Thursday.

 Commuters, cyclists and pedestrians have found rare common ground as they battle delays and difficult transport routes caused by the temporary closure of a key southside thoroughfare in Brisbane. Work on upgrading and extending the Buranda busway station to allow for the new Brisbane Metro has begun but meant Brisbane City Council has closed the eastbound lanes on busy O'Keefe Street between Carl Street and Gillingham Street. A detour is in place via Carl Street, Cornwall Street, Logan Road and Montague Street and the westbound lanes on O'Keefe Street between Gillingham Street and Carl Street were also reduced to a single lane.
