Australia: Prevent Restraint in Aged Care

Image
(Sydney) – Australia’s health and aged care ministers should immediately revise an aged care regulation to prohibit chemical restraint, Human Rights Watch and Aged & Disability Advocacy Australia said today in a letter to the two ministers. Chemical restraint involves giving older people with dementia drugs to control their behavior. “The Australian government has recently received three major reports on the horrific effects of chemical restraint in aged care,” said Bethany Brown, researcher on older people’s rights at Human Rights Watch. “The ministers for health and aged care should take immediate and decisive action by banning chemical restraint and requiring real support for older people with dementia.”  Read more:  https://www.hrw.org/news/2019/11/24/australia-prevent-restraint-aged-care

Gender health gap: Australian medical research ignoring drugs’ side effects in women

Image
Women are being ignored in medical trials and reports, according to a report which calls for more Australian medical research to include gender-specific data. Failing to account for the different effects a drug may have on men and women compromises quality of care for women, according to the report published in the Medical Journal of Australia on Monday. “Historically and consistently across a broad range of health domains, data have been collected from men and generalised to women,” the authors of Sex and Gender in Health Research: Updating Policy to Reflect Evidence wrote. Australia is spending less on diplomacy than ever before – and its influence is suffering as a result

Image
Ten years ago, the Lowy Institute published a report on the state of Australia’s diplomatic capacity that painted a “sobering picture” of overstretched foreign missions and declining resources. In the words of then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who was quoted in the report: Given the vast continent we occupy, the small population we have and our unique geo-strategic circumstances, our diplomacy must be the best in the world. However, since then we haven’t put enough resources into our diplomacy as we should. New research by Asialink at the University of Melbourne published in Australian Foreign Affairs shows continuing under-investment in Australia’s diplomatic capacity, with funding for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) now at a new low of just 1.3% of the federal budget. read more:  http://theconversation.com/australia-is-spending-less-on-diplomacy-than-ever-before-and-its-influence-is-suffering-as-a-result-125722

How to Stage Your Home While Preparing for a Move?

Image
To make your house appealing for potential buyers, you need to stage it. Staging is the process of preparing the house for sale when you put it on the real estate market. To stage the house hire removalists in Brisbane to shift your belongings to your new residence beforehand. Next, declutter and clean it until everything sparkles. Painting walls, patching up holes, and removing mould will help tremendously. You can invest in 'temporary replace' furniture to make the house look more presentable. Undertaking repairs will help as well since noon will find a house with leaky faucets desirable. Scott Morrison dismisses concerns China-Australia tensions have weakened economic bonds

Image
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has dismissed concerns diplomatic tensions between Canberra and Beijing have strained the relationship between the two countries, arguing it is built on honesty about their differences. Mr Morrison met with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Bangkok last night, ahead of today's East Asia Summit, describing the meeting as "candid". Accusations about interference in Australia's political system and criticism of Beijing's human rights record have prompted scathing lectures from Chinese officials, effectively telling Canberra to keep quiet. But the Prime Minister disputed assertions those incidents undermined broader economic bonds. "There is an honest acknowledgement … that we are two very different countries," Mr Morrison told reporters in Bangkok.
