Australian director Shannon Murphy made short work of an inevitable question at the Venice Film Festival this week: is it a struggle to survive as a female filmmaker? For Murphy, who is competing at the festival with her debut feature Babyteeth, the film's press conference was not the right forum for such a discussion.
"I think it's a struggle to always be having to answer questions about being a female filmmaker, to be honest," she said. "Mainly because I feel it takes away from the artistry of what we're trying to do. I think the conversation is really important but in the right context, where it's a panel particularly about that. Otherwise it overshadows this film."
