Highway, rail among four Queensland projects to get green light

The next stage of the Gold Coast's light rail line is a step closer after being given a nod from Australia's independent infrastructure adviser.

Infrastructure Australia has approved the business cases for four Queensland projects with a combined value of $6 billion - Gold Coast light rail stage 3A and three Bruce Highway upgrades - adding them to the national Infrastructure Priority List.

Infrastructure Australia chief executive Romilly Madew said the expanded light rail line on the southern part of the Gold Coast - from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads - would help tackle congestion.

"Gold Coast light rail stage 3A addresses the dual challenges of population growth and high levels of car dependency on the Gold Coast, one of Australia's major tourism destinations, which hosts around 12 million visitors each year," she said.
