Residents in Narangba, north of Brisbane, asked to ‘prepare to leave’ as fire burns through bush

Image
Firefighters are working to contain a bushfire north of Brisbane but have warned they may not be able to protect every property in the semi-rural area and conditions could get worse. The fire at Narangba, in the Moreton Bay region, is considered at “Watch and Act” level, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said on Thursday night. “You need to be ready to follow your bushfire survival plan,” the QFES said. “If you do not have a plan, or intend to leave, you should be ready to leave the area because the situation could get worse quickly.” Residents should close their windows and doors as the smoke affects visibility and air quality. Anyone who believes their property is under threat is urged to contact triple-0 immediately. Man imported cocaine to Australia in stomach

A man's plan to smuggle more than 600 grams of cocaine into Brisbane came unstuck when at least one of the pellets burst in his digestive system on a flight from Los Angeles. French citizen Adrien Lionel van Langenhove agreed to carry the drugs into Australia to clear an $5600 business debt he had incurred while working and living in Costa Rica and Guatemala. He arrived at Brisbane International Airport on December 3, 2017 and was searched by customs officers, who found traces of cocaine on his luggage. However, they waved him through when they failed to locate any more drugs. With pains in his stomach increasing, Van Langenhove, 39, sought help from a pharmacist who called an ambulance on his behalf. He spent several days in hospital having 86 pellets containing 637 grams of cocaine removed from his body either by surgery or through natural expulsion. Van Langenhove was arrested by police upon discharge, and today pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Supreme Court to importing a ...

Surgeries cancelled at Brisbane hospital after ‘malfunctioning’ sterilisation equipment

Image
Rusty equipment may have been to blame for forcing surgical operations to be suspended at one of Queensland’s busiest hospitals, leaving patients waiting for scheduled surgeries. Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, one of Australia’s leading teaching and research hospitals, was under the microscope when staff told the ABC they noticed rust on some of the equipment. Health Minister Steven Miles confirmed there was a “malfunction with the sterilisation equipment” but said no patients were exposed. “Due to a malfunction with the sterilisation equipment, the Princess Alexandra Hospital is only conducting emergency and urgent elective surgery today with reserve sterilised equipment,” the minister said on Friday. “As always, patient safety is the priority. I have been advised that no patients have been exposed to unsterilised equipment.” Read more:  https://thenewdaily.com.au/news/state/qld/2019/08/23/brisbane-hospital-surgery-equipment/
